Qualifications

•Knowledge of the practices, procedures, materials, terminology, tools, and safety precautions of the electrical trade

•Knowledge of the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electric instruments, devices, and equipment

•Skill in the use of the full range of tools and testing equipment used in the electrical trade

•The ability to understand and follow oral and written directions, some of a highly-technical nature

•The ability to read and understand plans and blueprints; mechanical aptitude; and manual dexterity

•Dependability; thoroughness; attention to detail with a view to safety; willingness to work with high voltage equipment and devices;

•Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position

•Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and either:

•Graduation from a regionally-accredited or New York State-registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Technology or closely-related field and one year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as a journeyman electrician; or

•An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above

 

Responsibilities

•This position involves responsibility for the performance of duties as a skilled journeyman electrician in the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring, equipment, and devices

•The work is carried out in accordance with well-established, accepted, safe and sound electrical installation, maintenance, and repair techniques and procedures in accordance with applicable State and local codes

•Incumbents perform their duties under the general supervision of a higher-ranking administrator/manager with considerable latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in the planning and/or laying out of the details of work

•Direct supervision may be exercised over the activities of a limited number of workers, who assist in the performance of maintenance and repair jobs, on a semi-skilled level

•Reads and interprets plans and blueprints in planning for the installation of new electric service, lines, and equipment

•Installs and properly wires a variety of electrical devices including breakers, fuse boxes, junction boxes, lighting and fan fixtures, transformers, rheostats, voltage regulators, electric heat runs, and electric outlets

•Runs new electrical lines and wires them appropriately for required service

•Operates testing equipment utilized in the trade to locate shorts and malfunctions in a variety of electrical devices and equipment, and performs repair or replacement accordingly

•Installs a variety of electrical appliances and tests them to insure proper operation

•Maintains and repairs electrical motors and other components of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, and performs adjustments as necessary

•Estimates materials required for installation and repairs

•Keeps daily time and material records

•Performs carpentry and plumbing work incidental to but needed for proper completion of electrical jobs

•May be required to install telephone lines and other wiring for hook-up of computer equipment
