For anyone looking to obtain a Construction Supervisor License in the state of MA. This is an online, self-paced, instructor led course designed to prepare you for the Unrestricted MA Construction Supervisor License exam. To apply for a construction supervisor license, you must:

  • Determine the type of license you'd like to apply for: Unrestricted CSL, Restricted CSL (One and Two Family Dwellings), or Specialty CSL (Masonry, Roof Covering, Windows Doors Sliding, Solid Fuel-Burning Appliance, Demolition, or Insulation). See "Does Massachusetts require a contractor license?" below for different types  of licenses.
  • Verify that you have the required 3 years of experience in building construction or design, and that you have documentation. Work experience doesn't need to be continuous, but it must be full-time (40 hours per week) within the past ten years. Click  here  to view exceptions to this requirement. 
  • Download and submit an  exam registration form  to  Prometric, the company who administers the exam.
  • Wait 10 days after submitting your registration form, and then call  Prometric at 800-813-6671 to schedule your exam date.
  • Prepare for and take the exam.
  • Once you complete the exam, submit your passing score report to the Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) to obtain your construction supervisor license.

Massachusetts requires a Construction Supervisor License for certain types of construction jobs. There are different types of licenses for different types of construction:

  • Unrestricted CSL Scope of Work:
    Construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, removal, or demolition
    Building Types and Structures:
    • Buildings of any use containing less than 35,000 cubic feet
    • 1- and 2-family dwellings with any additional accessory
    • Buildings or structures for agricultural use
    • Walls less than 10 ft. (from base of footing to top of wall)
  • CSL One and Two Family Dwellings Scope of Work:
    Construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, removal, or demolition
    Building Types and Structures:
    • One and two family dwellings with any additional accessory
  • Specialty CSL Masonry Scope of Work: Construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, removal, or demolition of masonry structures that requires a permit Building Types and Structures:
    • Buildings of any use containing less than 35,000 cubic feet
    • 1- and 2-family dwellings with any additional accessory
    • Buildings or structures for agricultural use
    • Walls less than 10 ft. (from base of footing to top of wall)
  • Specialty CSL Roof Covering Scope of Work:
    Construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, removal of roof covering, including repair, Replacement of 25% sheathing and 25% of sistering roof rafters

    • Buildings of any use containing less than 35,000 cubic feet
    • 1- and 2-family dwellings with any additional accessory B

  • Specialty CSL Windows Doors Sliding Scope of Work:
    Construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, or removal of doors, windows, and siding. Includes repair and replacement of damaged window or door framing <4’ wide and up to 25% of sheathing

  • Specialty CSL Solid Fuel-Burning Appliance Scope of Work:
    Installation of solid fuel burning appliances. Does not allow work on any structural elements including sheathing. Inlet or exhaust elements required for installation may be exceptions.
