Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • A combination of education and experience, which indicates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position will be considered
  • Candidate must hold a hoisting engineer’s license with a 2A endorsement, and a Class B operator’s license
  • A Class A operator’s license is a definite plus
  • The above person must be able to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work
  • PERTINENT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to safely operate equipment
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of heavy equipment
  • Ability to identify mechanical problems and to correctly address the same
  • PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS
  • The job frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying items weighing 20 to 50 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Under the general direction of a Highway Foreman, this position is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment and a variety of manual laboring tasks associated with the maintenance of the town’s infrastructure
  • The incumbent is responsible for the routine maintenance of motorized equipment assigned to the Department
  • Operates heavy equipment including but not limited to sweepers, dump trucks, and front end loaders
  • Maintains the infrastructure of the town with said equipment
  • Performs routine maintenance to equipment including general vehicle upkeep (washing, keeping interior clean, greasing, circle check, etc.)
  • Performs manual labor with basic hand tools (rake, pick, shovel, etc.)
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Prolonged operation of equipment over rough terrain is possible
  • The employee will have routine exposure to adverse weather and potential injury
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous substances such as but not limited to gasoline, diesel fuel and hot asphalt is all routine
