Responsibilities

  • In this role, you will perform skilled labor duties and operate a range of vehicles and equipment, including riding lawn mowers, dump trucks, snowplows, road rollers, recycling and solid waste vehicles, power tools, and other assigned units, to support the Highway Department’s operations of maintenance of public ways, solid waste, and recycling as assigned
  • The successful candidate will be a dependable team player with strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to safely operate heavy equipment, and a commitment to maintaining Dartmouth’s roadways, solid waste & recycling operations year-round
  • Conducting pre-operation inspections of equipment to ensure proper functioning of controls and safety devices; performing routine lubrication, servicing, and preventive maintenance; reporting major issues to the Master Mechanic and assisting with significant repairs (e.g., engine blocks, hydraulic components, truck bodies)
  • Performing manual labor tasks such as digging holes, plowing/sanding/salting roads and sidewalks to remove snow and ice, patching potholes, cutting highway brush, cleaning storm drains, manholes, and culverts, and repairing sewer and water pipelines
  • Supporting solid waste and recycling collection operations when assigned, ensuring scheduled pickups meet DPW specifications, delivering solid waste and recycling to disposal sites, and emptying trucks
  • Operating vehicles and specialized equipment to spread sand/chemicals for ice control, plow and remove snow, load snow, clean sewers hydraulically, operate road rollers, compactors, and other heavy trucks to collect and compact rubbish
  • Participating in the Town’s Snow and Ice Control Program and On-Call Program as a condition of employment
  • The role requires proficiency in heavy equipment operation, mechanical awareness, and the ability to perform both skilled equipment-based and labor-intensive tasks year-round in support of public infrastructure maintenance
